Mission

Our primary mission is eyes on the course to provide safety and back up the Marine Corps Marathon personnel. In the event of a downed runner, contact OSV immediately. There will be appropriate medical support on site for the duration of the event under the command of Top Doc.

There are three concurrent races occurring during this event.

Recon Ruck (NEW): The Recon Ruck sends participants into Quantico’s hills, trails and roadways for a 12-mile journey while wearing a weighted pack [1].

Belleau Wood 8K: Run 4.97 miles in the spirit of the Marines who earned the nickname “Devil Dogs.”

Quantico 12K: The Quantico 12K hosts the 7.46 mile run through Marine Corps Base Quantico. Preparation begins here for Marines, as well as many runners training for the MCM.

Please note that the course has been modified. The return run on Hawkins has been moved south Barnett because of construction. If an updated map is provided prior to the event, it will be distrubuted.

Recon Ruck steps off at 0545. There will be several waves leaving about five minutes apart until all the runners are gone, aproximately 0730. Current count is 500 runners, and they expect everyone will be back in by 1030.

Parking

We have permission to park at, or near the critical points. Please make sure to keep your vehicle as far off the course as possible. Those supporting the Arch (Start/Finish) and the OSV, there will be parking provided in the staff parking area. For everyone else, park where it is going to give you the best view and off the course.

Equipment

Based on our site survey, the course can be managed with HTs, but a mobile with external antenna is preferred. Where possible, a headset is a valuable asset.

You will want a light. The race starts before the sun comes up and it can be dark in some of the more heavily wooded areas for a bit longer than that.

You must wear a mask for this event. Sorry, but those are the rules.

Operational Parameters

We will plan to operate on simplex at 147.525, the normal ARES operational frequency. Relays may be needed. All support requests need to be sent to OSV, where they will be managed as in an EOC situation.
